Students use their imagination to create projects like chop sticks.

Students can choose to make a sword learning how to cut, rasp and sand to shape the wood.


Making a Bowl

Making a Bowl

Students carve their own bowls using traditional hand tools like gouges to shape the depth.


In this course, students will immerse themselves in the art of using traditional hand tools to craft beautiful creations. Discover the intricate techniques behind Shinto rasps, hand saws, spokeshaves, drawknives, hand drills, ratchet braces with centre point drill bits and various sanding paper grits.
Through our 6 week term sessions, they'll gain the skills and confidence to handle these tools with ease and precision.
The first woodwork project is making a mallet, which is an essential hand tool for every woodworker.
General guide based on school years as follows:
  • Year 5 - mallet, stress stone, sword, carved animal, spatula
  • Year 6 - bowl, spoon, jewellery box
  • Year 7 - mitre joint (picture frame)
  • Year 8 - tenon wedge (bush stool, paper towel holder)
  • Year 9 - housing joint (shelf, bookend)
  • Year 10 - dovetail joint (box)
  • Year 11 - upcycling project
  • Year 12 - free project to be agreed on by the teacher and participant
Throughout the workshops, students will be guided in a supportive and encouraging environment, perfect for beginners and experienced woodworkers alike. Feel the thrill of creating something with their own hands and the satisfaction that comes with each finished piece. At the end of the term, take home their unique woodwork creations, each a testament to their newfound skills and creativity.
Current 6 week class:
Thursdays 9am to 10.15am during school term.

Term 2 Dates:
Thursdays on 30th April, 14 May, 21 May, 28 May, 4 June & 11 June.
Term 3, 2026 opening available for 2 students for the 9am session. Please contact Yol Creative for an expression of interest.
Note:
  • Some projects may take more than one term to complete based on participant abilities.
  • Teaching is 1 hour and 15 mins and an extra 15 mins allocated for clean up.
  • Students to provide their own choice of wood stool top, up-cycling project or any other larger projects to be discussed and agreed with by the teacher.
What you'll get

Knowledge required
No prior knowledge is required if joining at the year 5 level. If joining at a later year level the wood projects from the earlier years need to be completed first.
What to bring
Please wear enclosed shoes with hair tied back.
Session repeats

This class series runs over 6 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 10 years old).

Adult accompaniment is not required.

I founded Yol Creative in 2024 to provide art and woodwork workshops, aiming to empower individuals to explore their creative potential and foster a sense of community.
With a solid foundation in creativity cultivated at a Rudolph Steiner School in Switzerland and a double major in Fine Art from the University of Western Australia, I teach woodwork, sculpture, and art at three Steiner Schools.
At West Coast, Silvertree, and Helena River Steiner Schools, I have developed engaging woodwork programs, including a homeschooling initiative at Helena River Steiner School.
Workshops are held at Millgum Farm in the Swan Valley or at Helena River Steiner School depending on the number of participants.
