Establishing a horizon line

Choose whether you want your horizon in the middle of the page or higher or lower. Usually having it off centre allows for more visual interest.


Using yellow

To create an intensity of the sunset working with yellow layering up shading with firmer pressure at the horizon line moving up into the sky.


Introducing red

Gently incorporate red over a portion of the yellow further away from the horizon line.


Add blue

Add Blue

Start introducing blue from the top of the page moving down to the horizon line carefully blending into the red to form purple.

Now use the yellow in various shades by firmly and lightly shading the suns reflection on the water.

Using the blue firmer at the horizon line moving down and lightly across into the sun’s reflection.

To create depth and visual interest use the red gently over the blue to create purple and blue over the yellow to create green.

Final blending allows you to create further depth in parts of the drawing. Final touches to your finished ocean drawing.
